The history of Special Operations Forces dates back to the end of the last century. In 1998 the "Low-Intensity Military Operations Preparation Center" was formed on Kodjori military base which was renamed after one year as the "Military Operations Preparation Center in Small Scale Conflicts".
On the bases of this Center, on November 22, 1999, for the first time in the history of the country, with the help of Turkish instructors the Georgian Special Forces training and equip program has begun and the first Georgian Special Forces group was formed. Later, the US and NATO were involved in the preparation process.
The Special Operations Unit has undergone transformation several times over the past two decades. In 2002 the Special Forces Brigade was created. Later the brigade was renamed as the Special Operations Group, and since 2009 it is called the Special Operations Forces.
